My Ultimate Photoshoot Dress Guide

Let's talk about one of my favorite things: FASHION! I know that deciding what to wear to your session can be a stressful thing, so I'm here to help!

Be You.

Don't add too much stuff that isn't "you". This rule will precede all others below, because if my advice isn't you, then ignore it. We want to make sure we are capturing you guys for who you are so you don't look back in twenty years and not even recognize yourself. So if you want to wear bright colors and triple patterns and everyone wears a hat, then that's fine. It's YOUR session. This blog is MY advice. You can take it or leave it!

Check Your Closet Before You Shop.

I know it's tempting to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe, and that's totally okay if that's what YOU want to do. Splurge if you can, baby! But if you're a little more financially strapped- go to your closet first! Pull out ALL of your options. I guarantee you can find something that you a) have only worn once or b) haven't worn in years or even c) that still has the tag on it (guilty). Keep that stress low!

Neutrals Neutrals Neutrals.

I'll say it again- NEAUTRALS. Tans, Nudes, Browns, Blacks. Stay away from primary colors (red, yellow, blue). We want to keep

things a bit more natural. Being an outdoor photographer, my backgrounds are 99% natural and earthy. Color is okay, but we can do it in such a much more natural way.

Avoid Blues.

This is my own personal opinion. Blues are "cold", which can come across that way in photos. We want to keep our images nice and warm. Refer to above paragraph! Oh, denim is the exception!

Movement.

This means flowy dresses, shirts, jackets, sweaters, scarves...anything that the wind can capture. Movement in photos creates romanticism, and that's what I'm ALL ABOUT.

Outfit Changes.

I'm not one of those photographers who charges by the outfit. I WANT you guys to have a variety if that's what you're looking for. We can do as many outfit changes as you want within our scheduled session time. So maybe this is when you go shopping for the EXTRA outfits. Lol.

Accessories are Fun!

I am the first person to want to wear a hat, or bring a blanket, or pillows, or flowers, or champagne, etc etc etc! Always feel free to bring as much as you want. I LOVE seeing all of your creative ideas and it gives your images so much more life!

Don't Match.

We've all been there. The whole family, beach setting, denim jeans, white shirts... It's been done before. Way too many times. I personally have been victimized by this trend. You can match without matching. Dress in the same color schemes. You can even throw a pattern in there. I have shown a few color scheme guides that I personally love, and a great example below of mixing darker fall colors with a pattern. Even though the dad is wearing blue, because it's a dark navy blue it's still able to keep the overall tone warm.

Lastly, Ask Me For advice!

I've had a few clients reach out and ask if it's okay to send me pictures of their outfit ideas, and it is absolutely okay! I encourage it, actually. Any questions at all, I'm just a dm, text, or email away.
